I traveled, I search for internship, I went for class, I registered myself for the revision class, and I plan..
One question strike on me this morning and it makes me think.
It happened quite randomly in a chat room between me and my ex-housemate ( my buddy or my bro which how I often address him as )
This is how it goes.
A: Actually ShuLing, I ask you ah, random ques, do you really want to practice as a lawyer?
Caz if you don't have to, if you don't want to..
( we also talked bout other stuff so it continues to other topic, meanwhile we're discussing bout this )
Me: I'm not too sure if I want to practice, at this moment, I do not know what I can do other than completing my CLP, another thing is I don't get much exposure on how the real practice world works, so I'm always being unsure bout whether or not practicing is my thing
A: The job will be settling disputes, and if you don't do that, probably conveyancing. If that's the case, I would rather encourage you to do something more worthwhile, something you will enjoy :)
I looked at my phone and started thinking, do I want to practice? Am I firm bout choosing this pathway? What else I can do? When it comes to studies, I did it the 'follow the rule' way without thinking much, whether or not I want this- to be my job.
He continues..' Don't worry about what others will think of you, just because you do something else doesn't mean you are a loser or you gave up. Most important thing is that you know you're doing something you want to do.
I would not think any less of you if you change jobs, and I'm sure your family would think the same. I'm saying this because in the bar, almost everyone in the bar has made a brave decision to do the bar. It's not easy and only 20% gets a job as a barrister, but they do it because they really believe they want to represent people and they are passionate bout it. So they're willing to do it in spite of the difficulty, which got me thinking.
So I'm just asking you out of my thought. Not because I want to discourage you or anything like that, but I want to tell you that you wouldn't want to waste time doing things you don't like.
Your law degree isn't waste if you don't do CLP. You're a degree holder man, not easy feat! If you really want to give CLP and law practice a go, think bout your future.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 10 YEARS?
If you don't see yourself practicing, nothing wrong with that.Really. It doesn't make you less of a human.Just do something you're passionate about. What I'm saying is, if you're unsure about practice, most likely you don't really care much about :p
I'm sure you're good at other things, and maybe it could mean that you should seek those options and see if they work. What matters is the direction you have for yourself and how convinced you are of that directions.
Whatever you put your mind to, you will succeed eventually.
So if you want to be a lawyer, you need to start making up your mind to tell yourself you want to represent people. You want to help people in law. You want to argue for people, not for yourself. You want to be a voice for a client who needs one. Don' t just settle for a job just because it's safe. Thats for boring people. You're not a boring person. go for something worthwile. Something that is contributing to the society, and you'll find yourselves more satisfied than ever. Conveyancing, it brings money. But do you want to do conveyancing for your whole life? If you enjoy, then fair enough, go for it. If you are unsure, don't worry, what you need to do is keep your option open, don't wait for opportunity to come. LOOK FOR THEM. Don't wait to see whether it'll suit you, MOVE! You know what I mean?
I paused..I answered: Ya, okay ( with dots)...
:) Hey! I hope I didn;t discourage you. I'm not saying that you can't be a good lawyer. What I'm saying is you gotta start being yourself! Always make sure that you have a direction. Never be aimless.
Take sometime to think, then rest and think about it again, and rest and think again. And, make up your mind. Whatever it is, it doesn't matter whether it would be a mistake or not, just stick to your decision and to your direction. Sorry for my rant, hope that helps!
Don't wait for opportunities to come, they never do. That's one thing I learned when I was younger.
Have to go and fish for them. :)
Thank you bro. A friend that has been staying with me under a roof for 2 years, as my housemates. The one that kinda knows my weakness, and always encourages me.
Exam, pre exams, post exams, and now carreer. Thank you for your words. I decided to type it out as reminder, not to be lazy anymore, move, and start to think who am I, what I want, and what I want to achieve in 10 years time.
Always my listener, thank you :)
